Marine Biology

science beakerFor those who love all things science, marine biology is a great field to explore.  It isn’t as drab as some other sciences or limiting such as studying plant life or mold growth. In fact, marine biology jobs primarily consist of jobs that involve the research of and working with animals in an ocean setting or any environment that involves water-based wildlife and plants. Some marine biologists work at aquariums where they research categories of animal species that reside at the aquarium and they may even work as the directors of the aquarium. Some marine biologists also study marine animals such as whales, dolphins and seals while other marine biologists study the makeup of various oceans around the world and they seek to conserve them.

The main goal of a marine biologist is to seek out current problems and questions that relate to marine life and they do this by creating theories and by preparing research papers based on the areas of interest that want to study. Marine biologists then take their research findings and publish them in science journals or present them at academic conferences or even as part of testimony before the Congress on a certain issue. Marine biologists sometimes teach on this subject at universities and they travel a lot.

Preparing for Marine Biology Jobs

If you want to become a marine biologist or work in a marine biology-related field, you should obtain a four-year degree in marine biology, biology, animal science or aquatic sciences. You can also choose a minor such as zoology or veterinary sciences. Most marine biologists go on to pursue a masters degree and others choose to get a doctoral degree.

aquariumCareer in Fishery Sciences

Some marine biologists work primarily in fishery science and in this field they generally research and seek to conserve the diverse varieties of fish in oceans, lakes and rivers. These marine biologists work at fisheries and aquariums but they may also work at wildlife centers and for agencies such as the National Oceanic Atmospheric Association.

Salaries of Those Who Work in Marine Biology

There are factors that contribute to the salary of marine biologists and these include education, years of experience and location, as well as the type of employers the marine biologists work for. For example, marine biologists with a bachelor’s degree earns between $30,000 and $45,000 annually while marine biologists who have at least a year of work experience earn up to $54,000 according to PayScale. If you have up to 20 years of experience as a marine biologist you would earn $72,000. Marine biologists who work for the government and research organizations earn higher salaries than other types of marine biologists.

When you work in marine biology, you get the opportunity to research and seek innovative ways to preserve marine life daily. This job also allows you to travel extensively and meet fellow researchers and everyday people who share your goals and values. While you are in college, you should seek out a few mentors in this field so that you can get assistance in entering marine biology and so you can establish job leads after graduation.

Humane Lab Animal Treatment

humane lab animal testingThere are a lot of precautions that should be taken in making sure that the health and safety of residents on science campuses are being catered to. There are some animals that are used for the purpose of research and testing, and most of these are purchased through private vendors. The professors who work at colleges claim that they have no random source and that the animals are actually bred for research purposes.

There are facilities that will do the process of inspections to check if there is adequate husbandry throughout the housing process. Every six months the institution will visit the facilities. Most campuses are accredited for the humane treatment of their lab animals.
The organization that evaluates the research facilities for the proper treatment of animals is the Association for assessment. This is a process that must be done every three years. There are many animals that are kept in various units that are regulated in comfortable temperatures. When a project is set up the animals are placed in different rooms. Depending on the type of experiment, the room size may vary.

Researchers who want to house their own experiments within the facility are charged a rate daily for their projects. Some universities, such as Ohio State University, were sued for the death of a couple of chimpanzees who were used for cognitive research. Carpenter is someone who works at the University, and he claims that within the 5 years that he’s worked there, he has not encountered any extreme acts of opposition against the usage of research animals.

PETA sent letters to the university during their statewide campaigns, one which they had a couple of years ago. Other than that, they haven’t dealt with any feedback which is negative. Lisa Crockett is an associate professor who works in the Biological sciences, and the facilities were used for her own fish study since 1995. Without the use of animals in accordance with research there would be no progress in it whatsoever. At times, the non-living models are completely inadequate and that is why the research must be done on animals.

There are some students who claim that animals are not a disposable resource for the purpose of human progress and use. She says that they think, feel and deserve our own appreciate; although, unless those who are afflicted with the uncured conditions are willing to test the subjects for medicines that have not been developed, it is very necessary.

Final Thoughts

Humane lab animal treatment is a touchy subject being that there are two views on it: the view that they are essential to improving medicine and ridding of disease and the idea that just because animals aren’t of the same species as us, we should use them to further or own society. This is a subject that has been discussed for a very long period of time, and it is still debatable to this day; it comes down to a belief system.
